Type Vase is a project that began in 2018 with the intention of creating a full ceramic alphabet. An exploration of form and shape between 2D and 3D typography. Like a designer designing a typeface, I focused in on the smallest details, taking inspiration from italicized letterforms to create a unified ceramic alphabet. To highlight the negative spaces in the letterforms, the stem intentionally passes through the spaces while maintaining the integrity of the form. The process was just as rewarding as the final product. Through trial + error and the long hours spent in the studio crafting each individual letter, I was able to gain a better understanding of typography in a way that made it become personal and unique from letter to letter.
